Moving away after divorce and retiring

Recommended Posts

Hi, ive just joined and need some advice.
I want to get divorced in 2026 after 40+ years. Its been horrendous. I have no privacy. Everything i say and do in my home is relayed to a bunch of peopke i have nothing to do with. Even when i told him i had cancer and didnt want anyone to know because i didnt want to answer questions, i just wanted to get on with it (thats my way). He nearly fell over himself to get on the phone to tell his little army. He has resented everything i say and do since day one really but i didnt know he was slating me and turning people against me my whole marriage.
i have saved some money and plan on moving back to my home town where my sister lives and my friends do also.
We live rent free in a company house (his old workplace). I live in one room. He has the rest of the house. There are no assets to share. I will only take my personal stuff and my treasured ornaments and my rocking chair when i leave.

im hoping to get an online ‘clean break’ divorce. I think he will agree to that. We rarely speak.
i will have to rent privately if thats possible on just my full state pension and a tiny works pension which wont amount to more than twenty pounds per month. Has anyone else done this? And were you successful? I will have to claim Housing Benefit i suppose. Ive never claimed anything my whole life.

Hi Julie, sorry to hear you've had to suffer for so long.  There are a few things to consider given your situation:

  • Given your long marriage and the unique situation with the company house, a solicitor specializing in divorce might be best. They can ensure a clean break is achieved and handle any legalities regarding the company house residency.  Many offer free initial consultations.
  • Claiming housing benefit can definitely help with renting privately
  • You could also consider seeking advice from a financial advisor to explore options for maximizing your income from your pensions.

I hope you get this resolved soon so you can move on with your life.

Peter
